Meet our customer: Kombucha Kat

Friday 15 January 2021

Sam Martingell is the founder & CEO of Kombucha Kat and since 2016 Sam and his team have been crafting organic kombucha by hand in the heart of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds.
How did your business start?
Out of necessity. I was coaching tennis but injured my shoulder so needed to find something else. My CV didn’t make me very employable, so I decided to employ myself.
What is unique about your company?
Kombucha is now a very crowded market and key USP’s are difficult to establish. At this stage, I believe our branding is what sets us apart.
Who and where are your customers?
Worldwide, but mostly UK, and mostly in London. Ocado is our largest customer.
How’s the future looking for you? What are your plans?
Ask me in six months time! Personally, I don’t think things are ever getting ‘back to normal’ and as a small business, I’m hoping our operational manoeuvrability outweighs our financial instability.
Why do you buy from Organic Herb Trading?
Organic Herb Trading have always been very friendly and personable which counts for a lot. Your commitment to organic is also a great feature of your business.
Why is organic / provenance important to you?
For me, its a personal value. I’m not sure that the organic status of our products provides a commercial net return on investment. But nature is more valuable than money.
Please feel free to tell us one unusual fact!
We play music to our kombucha as it brews to aid fermentation. We’re convinced that Talking Heads makes the best kombucha so far.
What is your favourite cup of tea / or long cool relaxing drink?
Japanese green tea in the morning, rooibos in the afternoon, valerian root before bed.
